Letter Cutting in Stone

While learning to carve marble and stone in Carrara, Italy, Eoghan was keen to acquire the art of letter cutting by hand. However, extensive enquiries revealed that, while there had been a strong tradition of the ‘parolaio’ (letter cutter) in the area up to the 1950s and 60s, with the introduction of mechanical means of cutting inscriptions the skills had been lost.

Fortunately, the arrival of Matt Thompson, a Cork sculptor and talented letter cutter, in Carrara provided Eoghan with the opportunity to learn the basic techniques of letter carving. Since then, he has taken great pleasure in exploring the capacity of letters carved in stone to convey meaning with a power and profundity impossible in any other medium. He accepts commissions for inscriptions of all types.
